It would be a shame to spend the entirety of your vacation in Mexico laying next to the pool and drinking margaritas. While that might sound relaxing and luxurious, being confined within the walls of a typical beach resort sounds pretty bland and boring to us.

Think about it, you’re in a foreign country. There are tons of places to see and things to do. Beyond those resort walls are unique experiences, interesting histories, and unusual places in Mexico worth exploring.

So why not visit these places while you can?

In this article, we’ll be highlighting a number of surreal places to visit in this Latin American country. From breathtaking and magical to spooky and strange, here are the places you should include in your next visit to Mexico:

Garden Las Pozas en Xilitla

Walking through this garden feels like you’ve entered a different world. It’s comparable to an enchanted kingdom, minus the fairies and magical creatures. In lieu of those are exotic plants, giant concrete structures, and an open-air palace.

This surrealist garden is a work of art by Edward James. He’s a British poet who moved to Xilitla to start growing exotic plants. When a storm destroyed all his orchids, he decided to focus his time and energy on making something more permanent, such as the sculptures and castle found in Las Pozas.

Now, the garden has become one of the most beautiful hidden places in Mexico that is frequented by thousands of travelers from around the world.

Where to find it: It’s located within the jungle, near a small town called Xilitla. To get there, you will need to drive yourself via a private vehicle (rental car) or go there by bus. The drive will take approximately eight hours from the province of San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

Museo Subacuático de Arte

The museum is submerged underwater on the coast of the Caribbean islands. It’s one of the largest underwater attractions in the world and was created to send an ecological message.

According to its creator Jason deCaires Taylor,

“Every day we dredge, pollute and overfish our oceans, while museums are places of preservation, of conservation, and of education. They are places where we keep objects that have great value to us. Our oceans are sacred.”

Within the water museum are nearly 500 statutes. Each piece has an interesting story to tell, from the greed of capitalists to the simplistic yet holistic living of the fishermen community.

One interesting fact: The place offers tourists a variety of options to tour the museum. You can either snorkel or scuba dive through this water wonderland. It’s definitely one of the many incredible places in Mexico to visit.

Where to find it: It’s located in Isla Mujeres, Cancun, Mexico. To get to the island, you’ll have to rent a boat.

Mexico’s Cenotes

They’re natural sinkholes that have been filled with freshwater overtime. The term may not sound as appealing as it should, but trust us, it’s going to be one of the most beautiful and unforgettable places you’ll ever visit.

Where to find it: The best and most beautiful cenotes in Mexico can be found in the Yucatan Peninsula. According to the country’s tourism department, there are at least 6,000 cenotes, all varying in size, which can be found in the peninsula.

It is also believed that many other unrecorded ones are hidden deep within the jungles of the country. Most of them are found near towns and ruins. Hence, the most convenient and efficient way to visit one is by car rental or shared taxis.

La Isla de las Muñecas

Let’s move on to the more spooky, shocking, and spine-tingling places to visit in Mexico. Just a word of caution, these places are not for the faint of heart. They are specifically for people who love the thrill of an eerie experience.

Without further adieu, we’ll start with the famous island of the dolls.

Here’s the ghost story associated with this place:

The corpse of a child was reported to have been found by one of the residents of the island. It was believed she had drowned and got washed up on the beach. After the incident, people started hearing the cries of a little girl. To appease her lost soul, residents started hanging dolls from a tree. It soon became a custom whenever people visit the place.

Many tourists and local visitors have claimed they’ve seen some of the dolls talk and move with their own eyes. Spooky.

Where to find it: The island can be found 17 miles away from the south of Mexico City. You can get there via ferry boat from Embarcadero Cuemanco. It will take you approximately three to four hours to arrive.

Museum de El Carmen Mummies

The building was formerly used as a monastery school and chapel. However, it was converted to a museum when a Mexican-Robinhood copyist, while searching for buried treasure to give to the poor, accidentally discovered a dozen mummified bodies.

They were believed to be monks from the monastery and are estimated to be more than three hundred years old.

Today, they’re housed in a glass enclosure where museum visitors can marvel and take a peek at their perfectly preserved bodies. The entrance fee will cost you 52 pesos or 4 USD.

Where to find it: It’s conveniently located in Mexico City. To get there, simply take the number three metro line going to Miguel Ángel de Quevedo.

National Museum of Death

The Museum of Death exhibits many historic skulls.

Last on our list is another morbid attraction. It’s a museum centered around death.

You’ll learn everything from its history, iconography, and funeral art. Of course, everything will be connected to Mexican culture.

Side note: Have you ever noticed Mexico has such a weird fascination with death and the afterlife? To illustrate, they have a holiday specifically dedicated to it – Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Aside from that, they also built a museum of death. Don’t you find that interesting?

Where to find it: The museum is located in the city of Aguascalientes, in the heart of Mexico. Besides the museum, you can also find interesting tourist attractions within the city. While you’re there, take a stroll in the nearby Teatro Morelos and Cathedral Basílica.
